Brooksville - Several community agencies convened on March 22 at Nature Coast Technical High School to present Prom Promise, a mock automobile crash presentation aimed to curb drinking and driving during teenage prom celebrations. In addition to Nature Coast's staff and students, event participants included Hernando Schools administration and maintenance department; and volunteers from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, Hernando County Fire Rescue, Florida Highway Patrol, Med-Trans Air Medical Transport, and the Hernando County Coroner's Office.
Nature Coast's seniors and juniors were invited to watch the presentation. The crash was divided into different scenes, each narrated and conveying a message. The mock crash presentation was a realistic view of what can happen during a motor vehicle crash.
Prom Promise is an initiative that was spearheaded by Nationwide Insurance in 1990 to reduce drunk driving and help save teenage lives on prom night. The ultimate goal is to inform students of the dangers of drinking and driving, and to have them sign the "Prom Promise," a pledge not to use alcohol or drugs, as they head out on prom night.
"The Prom Promise is an important demonstration that drives home the message that poor decision-making can lead to unspeakable tragedy. We are grateful to have been invited to be a part of this community effort to keep our students safe," said Nature Coast Principal, Toni-Ann Noyes. "We hope today's reenactment strongly discourages students from drinking and driving. We want prom to be a time of celebration and joyful memories."
